  2. payment. This need was less for those who, like the 
  3. Phoenicians, traded by sea. Portability, as a means of 
  4. expediting and extending the effective distance of action, was 
  5. also notably illustrated by papyrus. The alphabet was one thing 
  6. when applied to clay or stone, and quite another when set 
  7. down on light papyrus. The resulting leap in speed and space 
  8. created the Roman Empire.

  10.      In the industrial age the increasingly exact measurement 
  11. of work revealed time-saving as a major aspect of labor-saving. 
  12. The media of money and writing and clock began to converge 
  13. into an organic whole again that has brought us as close to 
  14. the total involvement of man in his work, as of native in a 
  15. primitive society, or of artist in his studio.
